Evaluating geomechanical effects related to the production of a Brazilian reservoir

Abstract This paper presents a coupled finite element approach for modeling geomechanical effects induced by production/injection processes in petroleum reservoirs. The module developed employs coupled- reservoir analysis using CMG IMEX® as the flow simulator and program MATLAB® stress–strain simulator, two-way explicit partial coupling scheme. mechanical problems are change of effective stress due to pore pressure varying stress-dependent properties, such compressibility, absolute permeability, porosity. procedure was applied Namorado Field (Campos Basin, Brazil) quantify impact rock deformation on fluid recovery. Based cases studied, analyses predicted higher oil recovery than conventional simulations. results showed that can affect its performance must be taken into account reservoir-engineering studies depending production strategy stiffness. Besides, calculations were performed only timesteps, reducing computational effort making this method feasible field scale.
